Dave’s birthday

Dave turned 44 on January 9, 2023!   What a tremendous father and husband he is to us.  We couldn't love him more!

He is currently coaching Josiah and Emma's basketball teams on Monday evenings.  Isaac and I made this Heath bar ice cream cake while they were at practice, and we sang to Dave and ate it after practice!  It was Isaac's idea to make the Rinn Homes logo on the cake, and he did most of the decorating - a great job!

After church the following Sunday, all our parents came over for lunch!  We had another ice cream cake - this time, Dave requested Reese's peanut butter.

These pictures are from a few days after Dave's birthday.  I had ordered this "Demo Day" shirt as a gift, but it didn't arrive in time.  Everyone got a great laugh out of it, and I'm sure it will be used on many demo days!

Countryside Fair 2022

After a runaround on costumes, Emma decided to dress like Mirabel from "Encanto" along with the Davis girls, and Josiah wanted to be a Mandalorian.  My idea of having everyone coordinating in Peter Pan costumes, didn't work (ha!), but the kids were so excited with their costumes.  Titus wore his same pumpkin costume from last year, and Isaac -- after much deliberation -- decided to be a football player!  It was one of our favorite nights of the year, as always.  The Countryside Fair is just so fun and sweet!  Isaac stuck with his friends for most of the evening, but we saw him a few times!

Josiah's favorite game - flying the airplanes

Emma's dog made by the balloon artist.
Her purse was stuffed with candy from the night, and, by the end of the evening, it had burst open!

Josiah was very proud of this balloon gun that the balloon artist made for him!

I was talking with Sarah, and Titus lunged for her!  He's getting more and more social!

Titus is on the move and standing still for a picture is hard!  :)

Pumpkin bundt cakes I made for the bake sale

I found Josiah talking with Pastor Tom in the gym after getting his balloon.  Josiah had been wondering about a deep, spiritual question about the timing of Jesus' birth, so I thought he was probably asking him about that.  When I walked over, they were discussing something and I couldn't figure out what.  It ends up that Josiah walked up to Pastor Tom and asked if he had seen the Star Wars movies!  Ha!!  Pastor Tom commented on Josiah's costume, and Josiah also asked him if he had seen any of the newer ones. When Pastor Tom said he had seen "A New Hope" in the theater, Josiah told him "that was very special because they don't do that anymore."   After Dave and I talked with Pastor Tom for awhile, we walked away and I got the full rundown from Josiah.  When I asked, "Why did you ask him that?" Josiah acted as if that were a ridiculous question and said, "I just never get to really talk with him!"  Hahaha!!!

Josiah never stopped to eat much for the night, nor did I.  By the time we went to the chili line, most of the pots were cleaned up and awaiting pickup!  A kind lady scraped out the bottom of one crock pot to make a small bowl of chili for Josiah, but we laughed and laughed about how it was nearly black with chili powder.   Everyone came home and ate again after such an exciting night!  Josiah very much wanted me to  enter the chili cookout ("you could win, Mom!"), but I stuck with the bake sale this year.
We all agreed the night went too fast and wished it were longer.  So much fun!

 JH Football:

The JH team is walking in to this week 3-0.  They took down Dallas Covenant Thursday night 40-26. The game was back and forth for the better part of the night.  CDA and Covenant trading touchdowns  went in to half time tied 20-20. Luke Manack (8th) and Luke Patterson (8th) connected on a beautiful 52 yard touchdown.  Emmanuel Johnson (8th) ran for two touchdowns showing explosive speed, running out of his own shoe, on one TD.  With 4:19 left in the 4th quarter Luke Manack had a 65 yard TD run that put the Lions up 40-26. Manack ended the night with 3 rushing touchdowns and 1 passing. Defense really showed up big in the 2nd half with some momentum shifting stops led by Braden Raybuck (8th), Johnson and Isaac Rin (7th).  Slade Hancok (8th) came up with a big interception at 1:57 left on the game clock. Our 6th grade lineup came in to close out the game with Ben Joy (6th) at QB completing a pass to Graham Vickers (6th) and sealing the Lions victory.  We are excited to watch this group take on St. Mark's this Thursday night.

 JH Football:

The Junior High teams had two tough losses last week.  The Gold team (6th grade) gave a valiant effort against Liberty Christian.  Ben Joy (6th) had a great touchdown run,  but ultimately the Lions came up short with the final score being 6-8.  Coach Johnson said that he loved the effort and improvement they have shown. He received several complements on how well they executed.

The Blue team also had a tough loss this week against Atlas Rattlers 22-30.  They had a quick start scoring on their first two possessions with a Manack (8th) to Patterson (8th) connection and a nice run from Emmanuel Johnson (8th).  The Lions wouldn't score again until the 2nd half on another EJ Johnson TD. Ben Joy had a nice interception on the Lions first defensive series and Isaac Rinn (7th)was battling on the line on every play. The Lions fought and got themselves an opportunity for a last second play. However, the game ended on a (controversial) call after an offensive penalty. Coach Johnson said he was proud of their no quit attitude.

The Five Silent Years of Corrie ten Boom

My friend Jennie recommended The Five Silent Years of Corrie ten Boom to me earlier this spring when we went on a double date. She and I often share book suggestions with each other.  She said there was nothing suspenseful about this book, yet she could hardly put it down.  I found the same to be true!  It was such a joy and encouragement to read about Corrie's continual faithfulness to the Lord in a hard circumstance.  I was also touched by her caretakers' deep love and service to Corrie and, ultimately, the Lord.

I wanted to save some of my favorite quotes/sections from the book to help me remember the truths of this book.

"It is not so much what happens, but how we take it, that is important," Tante Corrie had often told me.  Through the hard circumstances of the last years of her life, the Lord had shown me a paradox: The deepest fellowship with Him lies not in resisting when suffering comes our way, but in going through it resolutely with Him.

~~~~~~~
(A favorite quote of Corrie's and displayed in her California home.): My times are in Your hands.
~~~~~~~

In all the weakness, illness, and confusion, Tante Corrie retained her essential inner peace and never did those of us around her detect rebellion against God.   It was not what we never saw her weep.  We did.  We also saw moments of frustration and an emotional debility so common in stroke patients.  For example, sometimes, for no apparent reason, Tante Corrie began to cry.  At first I found this upsetting until I realized that it was part of the illness and had to be dealt with as such.

"Tante Corrie, what is the matter?"

A shaking of her head and a trembling of her thin shoulders.

"Are you in pain?"

"No."

"Are you weeping because everything is so difficult?"

"Ja!"

"Let's go to the Lord with it, Tante Corrie."

"Ja." She closed her eyes.

"Father, You know how Tante Corrie is feeling and how difficult this situation is for her.  Will You send the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, now at this minute to bring help to her and to restore her joy? If there is anything we need to know in order to help her, will You show us?  Thank You, Lord, in Jesus' name, Amen."

We opened our eyes.  She had stopped weeping and held out her hand for a tissue.  Blowing her nose firmly as if to say, "It is over," she was quiet and at peace again.  She was not immune to the emotional instability that all stroke patients have to bear, but in her times of distress her relationship with the Lord Jesus was very real, and He sustained her.

~~~~~~~
In what way was she fulfilling God's will now?  I asked myself, but even as I asked the question I could see part of the answer.
There had been a tremendous change in her way of life, one that could crush the spirit -- but that had not happened.  She was living for God.  I could see no difference in the attitude of this weak and silent Tante Corrie to that of the strong speaker whom I had joined nearly three years earlier.  She served Him then; she was serving Him now.  Her attitude said to me, "Since this suffering has come my way I will go through it with the Lord with the same resolution I needed when I was well."
She had served Him in her youth; now she was serving Him in her old age.  She had served Him in strength, now she was serving Him in weakness. She had served Him in health; now she was serving Him in illness.  She had served Him in her life; she was serving Him in her death.  We saw how God built her up in her spirit daily, did not forsake her, provided for her and sustained her.  A new awe and respect for the preciousness of human life came into our thinking.  God had made mankind in His own image.  He had made Corrie ten Boom in His own image.  Whether young, old, strong, weak, well, ill, she was equally precious in His sight.  His view of her had not changed although in the eyes of an achievement-oriented society she may have lost her usefulness.
~~~~~~~

   ...connection between Ezekiel and Tante Corrie, but noted that the response of the prophet and the response of God's twentieth-century servant were the same--obedience, not rebellion.  Ezekiel had a message to proclaim and he proclaimed it.  We were equally sure that Tante Corrie had a message to proclaim and was proclaiming it, yet without words.  Her very attitude was proclaiming, "when the very worst happens, the Lord Jesus remains the same."  Her life was saying that if she could be joyful and peaceful in her circumstances, other people surely could be in their easier ones, provided they too had a relationship with the Lord Jesus.

~~~~~~~~
When the very worst happens in the life of a child of God -- and it did -- the best remains, the best remains, and the very best is yet to be," Tante Corrie began.  From her bag, she slipped out a piece of cloth.  I recognized it as the shiny blue cloth I had mistaken for embroidery.  She held it up backward, so we were staring at the tangled, knotted, yellow thread of the wrong side.  The lady in pink, who was sitting very near to Tante Corrie, leaned forward to help her turn it to what she thought was the correct side.  Tante Corrie, smiling at her, lifted the cloth a little higher so that it was out of her reach and said:
"My life is like a wearing
between my God and me
I do not choose the colors
He worketh steadily
Sometimes He wealth sorrow
and I in foolish pride
Forget He sees the upper
and I the underside"
As she spoke the last two lines, Tante Corrie turned the cloth around so that instead of tangled threads, we saw a golden crown.  And she continued:
"Not 'till the loom is silent
and the shuttles cease to fly
will God unroll the canvas
and explain the reason why
the dark threads are as needful
in the skillful Weaver's hand
as the threads of gold and silver
in the pattern He has planned."
Countryside Church Picnic
We had such a fun time at the Countryside Church picnic on Sunday, May 29.  (Last year, I had walked extensively at the picnic after coming home from camping, and by the next night I was having contractions and went to the hospital.)  I was very thankful to enjoy this picnic with Titus and not be concerned about walking too much!  It was just a fantastic night!
We enjoyed delicious In-N-Out burgers and then ice cream from our favorite TX Ice Cream trucks for dessert.  Isaac inhaled his hamburger and then raced off to play with the youth, while Emma and Josiah bounced in the bounce houses.  It was so fun to talk with many friends from church together!
We had to laugh when someone grabbed us and said, "Look!" and we saw Josiah passing the football with Pastor Tom and Joey Pendrich!  Josiah said he saw Pastor Tom and Joey passing the ball and he went up and asked to join.  We were joking with our friends that this could be a good example for "what football is NOT" -- Pastor Tom often starts his sermons with what something is NOT (for example, "Here's what sanctification is NOT").  What a special memory!
Josiah found a duck to hold! Of course, he just picked it right up.  (Right now, he is in a stage where "he loves birds" and "wants to own a bird" and "wants to be a falconer when he grows up"!) The funny thing is that one of the Davis girls had also touched a duck earlier in the evening, and Brittany and I had been laughing about how in the world do these things happen....then, a few minutes later, Dave told me Josiah was clutching one.
