Emma's Backstory

With Mother's Day coming up this Sunday, I wanted to take a few moments to write "Emma's Backstory"--or, at least, what I am calling her backstory!  There are some more personal details in this, but I believe that they show how God is always working, even (and especially) when we can't see His plan.

Last summer, after losing both babies' adoptions, I had surgery that we hoped would help us conceive.  My doctor was very optimistic about the results and told us that, statistically, the highest chance of conception after a surgery like mine was in the first 6 months.  For the first two months after the surgery, we did unmedicated IUIs.  The sadness I felt in December, which was the sixth month after my surgery, was so heavy.  Often, our infertility is still very hard for me, and we had been very hopeful that this surgery may have given us an opportunity to grow our family through pregnancy.

After New Year's, David & I began praying more earnestly about how God would have us grow our family.  At that point, we had been waiting with Adoption Network for exactly a year.   Adoption Network didn't have statistics on what the average wait for consecutive adoptions is, but they did tell us that it would be significantly longer than their average wait time of 4 months for first adoptions.  In January, we called our adoption counselor and asked her what we could do to possibly get a match more quickly.  She offered several solutions.  We talked and prayed through them--some were easy, obvious choices to us and others were difficult.  We ended up changing a few things on our profile at Adoption Network, but we also prayed that God would show us other ways that we could grow our family, since we had no idea when we'd receive a match from Adoption Network.

In January, a lady at my parent's church contacted my mom about two brothers, ages 3 & 5, who were just being released from the foster system and were available for adoption.  This lady knew our story and wondered if we might be interested in adopting them.  My mom wisely talked to David about this situation without telling me about it--she wanted Dave to handle this how he best thought.  One night, I was telling David all about my friend Amanda's adoption of Brody from Ukraine.  Up until that time, we had never envisioned ourselves adopting an older child or sibling group.  Dave interrupted my story about Brody and asked if I had talked to my mom.  All of a sudden, I knew that he was about to say something BIG....he started to tell me about these two boys and I just started sobbing.  We talked about this possibility for a long time that night and both loved the idea!

The next morning, David called the boys' case worker.  We thought we would be eligible to apply for adoption of these boys since our home study was current.  The caseworker explained that we needed to be licensed as foster parents to adopt from the foster system.  We asked if there was any way we could complete the 30 hours of training necessary to be licensed.  The case worker was very sweet and said that we could try, but that the boys would likely be placed by the time we could realistically finish the 30 hours.

Even though we were disappointed that these brothers were out of reach for us, we wondered if this was God's way of opening our hearts to adopting a sibling group out of the foster system.  We contacted two local agencies that work with children in the foster system and began praying specifically about this option.

At the same time, we felt like we should go back to our fertility doctor.  We hadn't been back to see him since the winter of 2008/2009, but we wanted to discuss the surgery I'd had last summer and see what he thought of our options.  Given my age and several other variables, he gave us a great percentage for a successful IVF, which is one fertility option we hadn't previously done.  We had never before felt that God was leading us to do an IVF cycle; but, after meeting with our fertility doctor, we began to feel more open to it.  We'd always had some ethical questions about IVF, so we ordered this book.  David and I both read it in a weekend and together felt like we could do an IVF cycle that would not compromise our beliefs.

We prayed and prayed...God, should we begin training to be foster parents?  God, should we pursue IVF?  Both seemed hard, for very different reasons, and we knew that we couldn't move ahead with either one until God gave us both direction.

A verse that I clung to and prayed over many days during this time was "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.' " (Isaiah 30:21).  I can't explain how sad, and at times, frustrated, I was that God wasn't answering our prayer.  I felt like I was slowly surrendering my idea of what my family would look like and how it would grow...both David and I were ready, with open hearts, to move to the right or to the left with whatever God showed us.  But, we didn't feel like God was showing us anything.  Night after night, we'd talk about this...and all either of us could say was, "I just sense that God is saying 'wait'."

Of course, we had no idea that a beautiful birthmother, L, was deciding to place her baby for adoption.  At one of L's prenatal appointments, she talked about her adoption plan with her OB.  L's doctor told her that his daughter and son-in-law were infertile & asked if she would consider placing her baby girl with them.  L was very open to this, since she really respected her doctor and later told me she would loved the idea of placing her daughter with this couple.  The OB told L that he would bring his daughter's adoption profile to the office with him the next day and that she should call his nurse to get it.  L called her OB's nurse the next day and explained the situation.  Apparently the nurse looked everywhere and couldn't find the paperwork that was supposed to be there.  At her next appointment, L's OB asked if she had changed her mind on adoption.  She said no, and then he asked why she had never called to pick up his daughter's profile.  L told him that she had, and that the nurse had said couldn't find it.  He said it had been sitting on the nurse's desk ever since that morning.  In the meantime, L had found Adoption Network in the yellow pages.  She called and said that her only specification was for her daughter to be raised in a Christian family.  Adoption Network has many Christian families waiting for babies, but through God's providence, our profile was one of only six that they sent to L.  She chose us...and you know the rest of the story.

I am confident that the months we spent waiting were not wasted.  They definitely weren't what I envisioned, and there were many days that I cried for the babies whose adoptions we lost and cried that my surgery didn't have the result we'd hoped for...but God has used that time to show me that He will show David and I the way to walk--even when we have no idea where He is leading us.  We were convinced God was going to show us to begin training to adopt from the foster system or pursue IVF, but He didn't.  However, these opportunities were not wasted, and we believe God may use either of these options to grow our family in the future.  But for today, my heart is full with the realization that my God is faithful!  Even when we couldn't see an answer, He was still working.  And, His answer was beautiful!
On this Mother's Day weekend, I echo the words of Psalm 113:9:
"He settles the childless woman in her home,
as a happy mother of children.
Praise the Lord!"
"What God wants for you is never less than anything you have wanted.
You'll never come up short. And when He answers, in His time and in His way,
it will be richer, deeper, and far more meaningful."

There's Still My Joy

A sweet friend of mine shared this post from Molly Piper's blog this morning. In her post, Molly writes about grief & joy during the holidays and introduced me to the song "There's Still My Joy" by the Indigo Girls. It really is a must-listen, especially if 2011 has held unexpected pain for you or someone you love. It was exactly what I needed to hear today...and echoes the cry of my heart.
I took my tree down to the shore
The garland, and the silver star
To find my peace, and grieve no more
To heal this place inside my heart

On every branch I laid some bread
And hungry birds filled up the sky
They rang like bells around my head
They sang my spirit back to life

One tiny child can change the world
One shining light can show the way
Through all my tears, for what I’ve lost
There’s still my joy
There’s still my joy
For Christmas day

The snow comes down on empty sand
There’s tinsel moonlight on the waves
My soul was lost, but here I am
So this must be amazing grace

One tiny child can change the world
One shining light can show the way
Beyond these tears for what I’ve lost
There’s still my joy
There’s still my joy
For Christmas day
There’s still my joy for Christmas day
Some days are now beginning to feel "normal"--not that I don't still daily think of the two babies that we'd hoped to adopt, but the pain isn't always as intense as it was earlier this year. Other days, it still feels as raw as it did in April and May. Walking into Breakfast with Santa and seeing--what seemed like--babies everywhere was very, very hard. Having 3 stocking on our mantle, instead of 5, makes me wish for this Christmas as I'd dreamed it would be. And, looking at the closed door across from Isaac's room still hurts deeply.

God is showing me daily--sometimes hourly--that joy and pain can coexist. He is Emmanuel--"God with us"--and He is with me in both my joy and my pain. Slowly, He is "singing my spirit back to life."

Glory Baby

Four years ago today, we miscarried our first baby.  I still think of our first baby often & wonder what our life would be like today with a preschooler.  The loss of our first baby has taken on a different kind of hurt in the past year.  Before Isaac joined our family, I always imagined our first baby as a newborn, and my pain was borne from the fact that I'd never hold that baby in my arms.  But, parenting Isaac from a newborn into a child with his own distinct personality makes me wonder what kind of personality our first baby would have had.  That makes me hurt for him or her even more, because I realize that we've missed out on knowing that baby whom God made completely unique unto himself or herself.

I'm never one to say that the loss of our first baby was "worth" it because of all the good things that happened as a result of our miscarriage and subsequent infertility.  But, I can say that I am thankful for the good God has brought from our pain.  God has flooded our lives with friends that we likely wouldn't be as close to if it weren't for our shared experiences of loss.  I've been privileged to be a part of an incredible group of women at Keystone Church, Threads of Hope, that I wouldn't otherwise be in if it weren't for this hard part of our life.  And we never would have explored adoption, which eventually led us to Isaac.  These blessings in our life are the "good things" that God has grown from very tough times.  And even though I now have a baby in my arms, there are still days that I hurt.  But, God is taking these ashes of my life and making them into something beautiful....He is not done yet, but day by day, He is making all things new.

Glory baby you slipped away as fast as we could say baby…baby..
You were growing, what happened dear?
You disappeared on us baby…baby..

Heaven will hold you before we do
Heaven will keep you safe until we’re home with you…
Until we’re home with you…

But we miss you everyday Miss you in every way
But we know there’s a day when we will hold you, we will hold you
You’ll kiss our tears away when we’re home to stay
Can’t wait for the day when we will see you, we will see you
So baby let sweet Jesus hold you ‘til mom and dad can hold you…
You’ll just have heaven before we do
You’ll just have heaven before we do

Sweet little baby, it’s hard to understand it ‘cause we’re hurting, we are hurting
But there is healing and we know we’re stronger people through the growing
And in knowing that all things work together for our good
And God works His purposes just like He said He would…
Just like He said He would…

Isaac & Landrie's Gotcha Day Party!

For several weeks months, Corrie & I have been dreaming of a GOTCHA Day party to celebrate both Isaac & Landrie!  Isaac's adoption was finalized on Monday, April 26 in San Antonio, and Landrie's was finalized just one day later in Wichita Falls!  Our stories have been woven together so closely that we thought it would be extra-special to close out this part of our journeys with a joint party celebrating the finalization of both adoptions!

Corrie & I became dear friends as we struggled through infertility.  The two primary people God used in my life to change my heart toward adoption were Dave and Corrie.  I always used to hope that I could be pregnant at the same time as one of my close friends...and when we decided to adopt, I just figured that was something I would never get to experience.  But, God exceeded that hope by giving me Corrie!  (Isn't that just like Him?)  Dave & I are so thrilled to have shared our adoption experience alongside the Longs!

Corrie wrote an adorable poem that we included on the Evite for the party:
The Longs and Rinn are longtime friends
Each thought the waiting would never end

Last winter both couples chose adoption
Everyone was ecstatic about this option!

In September, Landrie joined the Long family
One month later, Isaac added to the Rinn family tree

These babies have brought us all so much joy
Let's celebrate the GOTCHA Days of this sweet girl & boy!

As Corrie so wisely pointed out, this party wasn't just about the finalizations of both adoptions...it was also to celebrate the end of this part of our journey.  For a long time, we were heartbroken about not having a baby in our arms...and though we still dream of larger families, this party was all about celebrating what God has done for us in ending our pain for a baby and placing these beautiful babies into our families!

This is a shot from Isaac & Landrie's "photo shoot" on Friday morning in their adorable outfits!  I honestly squealed when I first saw them!  Corrie's talented sisters-in-law sewed and embroidered them!

We had our party on Saturday at the pavilion at the Keller Sports Park.  There was a playground right next to the pavilion, and it was full of all the kiddos who came!

Both sets of Isaac's grandparents were able to be at the GOTCHA Day party, which was really special!

Landrie & Isaac with their proud parents!

Summer is such a busy time, but we are so happy that so many people were able to celebrate with us!  All of our guests loved, supported, and prayed for us during some of the tough parts of our infertility and adoption journeys.  We couldn't be more grateful for our amazing families & friends!  And, we especially couldn't be more grateful to our God....who is faithful & works all things for the good of those who love Him!

Mother's Day 2010

My heart couldn't have been more full this Mother's Day...it was my fourth Mother's Day, but the first with a baby in my arms.  For the past few years, Mother's Day has been one of the most difficult days of the year.  My heart ached to have a baby to hold....and Mother's Day was such a poignant reminder of what I didn't have in my arms.  In the past, Dave had always been so thoughtful to plan special getaways on Mother's Day weekend to take my mind off our infertility.  Last Mother's Day weekend, we had just been matched with Isaac's birthmother, so it was an especially sweet Mother's Day.  But, even that was nothing compared to having this precious baby in my arms this Mother's Day!
On Sunday morning at church, our pastor, Brandon, prayed an incredible Mother's Day prayer.  He prayed for moms whose hearts rejoice on Mother's Day....for moms whose hearts are breaking because their children aren't following the Lord....and for women whose hearts are breaking because they desperately want a baby.  Dave & I were sitting next to our dear friends Mark & Corrie, & I think Corrie & I used half a box of Kleenex just during Brandon's prayer.  It was such a reminder of the pain I had felt so deeply that has now been replaced with such joy....but also a reminder that Mother's Day is still difficult day for many women, regardless of their circumstance.
I couldn't be more grateful for the gift of Isaac...Isaac is proof that God does make beauty from our ashes (Isaiah 61:3)!

Our *big* news!

To our sweet family & friends:

We are so excited to share with you our big news that we are adopting a baby! Many of you know that we have struggled to grow our family for several years now. Our journey of infertility has been extremely difficult, but even through our darkest times, we clung to the promise from God's Word in Romans 8:28 that "all things work together for good for those who love God!" We are so excited to say that the best thing that has come from our journey is our joy & excitement at welcoming a precious little baby into our family through adoption!

We are working with a law center that specializes in placing domestic infants for adoption. Our past few months have been filled with more paperwork than we could ever imagine, completing our adoption homestudy, and preparing the nursery for little Rinn. In addition to all of this, Dave has kept busy building a gorgeous crib!

A prospective birthmother is able to view information on waiting families and choose which family she wants to raise her child. As excited as we are for the phone to ring with a call that we have been chosen, we have already discovered that this part of the journey is not easy, either. On Wednesday night, we received a call that a birthmother had selected us. After a tough 24 hours of reviewing all the information on the birth family, praying, and talking, we made the very difficult choice that we were not the right family for this baby. This experience has opened our eyes even more as to how much we need this entire process bathed in prayer.

Specifically, we ask you to pray for the following things:
**for the health & safety of our birthmother & baby
**for the families of the birthmother & birthfather to be supportive of their plans to place the baby for adoption
**for us to have wisdom in making a decision when another call comes
**for the details of the adoption--legal paperwork & potential travel out of state--to work out smoothly
**for our hearts to be patient & hopeful during this time of waiting

So many of you have supported and prayed for us through some very rough times, and we can't tell you enough how grateful we are for those prayers. We continue to ask for your prayers as we wait for little Rinn!

Reflections on March 8

It's hard for me to believe that today is the 2 year anniversary of miscarrying our first baby. In some ways, it's hard to believe how fast the last 2 years have passed; on the other hand, these last 2 years have seemed like a never-ending cycle of disappointment, tears, & deep heartache.

When I first found out that I was scheduled to sing at church this weekend, the anniversary of our loss, I was very worried that I would be a bawling mess on stage--especially since last year I stayed buried in our house on March 8. But, God gave me peace that I could sing this weekend with strength only found in Him. Yes, there were tears as I sang today, but they were sweet tears as I reflected on who I was 2 years ago and who God has shaped (and still is shaping) me into through our miscarriage & subsequent infertility.

Two years ago, I couldn't see all the good God could bring from this pain. This list isn't exhaustible; but, these are the main "good" things that I am thankful for right now:
--a depth & strength in our marriage that before I only imagined
--deep, real-life friendships with other girls forged from our shared experiences of infertility
--knowing personally in my heart-not just my head-that Jesus is faithful; that He truly does give us the grace we need to get through each day; and that God can cause all things to work together for good for those who love Him, as we are promised in Romans 8:28

Of course, I know there will still be hard days...after all, our arms are still empty. But, I can say that I am truly thankful for the pain & brokenness God has brought me through; because, the joy I felt today as I sang the following lyrics is a joy that can only come from being delivered from a place of hopelessness & despair.

I love you Lord, I worship You
Hope which was lost now stands renewed
I give my life to honor this
The love of Christ, the Savior King

Thank you, Jesus, for hope renewed.

Family Pictures

We had been wanting to do family pictures for quite a while now, but since we always assumed we'd be pregnant "just next month," we never had them done...until a good friend of ours encouraged us to have family pictures done now, even though our family looks nothing like we imagined it would at this point in our marriage.

So, on Saturday afternoon, we went down to the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens where our dear friend Jenny did our pictures! She also edited them, and we are so pleased with the results! Here are a "few" of our favorites! Thank you, Jesus, for the sweet times You give us together, even when life is hard.

"You Never Let Go"

Though we've never written directly about our infertility on our blog, most of our friends and family know that we have been struggling to have a baby for over 2 years. For a number of reasons, October is an especially hard month for us in this process, though we had a powerful morning at church today. We both feel overwhelmingly blessed to be a part of such a loving & supportive church family.

During this morning's services, our pastor, Brandon, took time for people to pray for those who are struggling. Since I was singing at church this weekend, I was in both services today, and I was absolutely overwhelmed that sweet friends of ours came to lay hands on us and pray during both morning services. It was such a precious time. Though our burden is heavy, it is such a blessing when others share it with us. After the time of prayer, we all sang the song, "You Never Let Go," which has become so meaningful to us during our journey. These words are our hope and prayer during this time of waiting.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
Your perfect love is casting out fear
And even when I’m caught in the middle of the storms of this life
I won’t turn back, I know You are near

And I will fear no evil
For my God is with me
And if my God is with me
Whom then shall I fear?
Whom then shall I fear?

Oh no, You never let go
Through the calm and through the storm
Oh no, You never let go
In every high and every low
Oh no, You never let go
Lord, You never let go of me

And I can see a light that is coming for the heart that holds on
A glorious light beyond all compare
And there will be an end to these troubles
But until that day comes
We’ll live to know You here on the earth

Yes, I can see a light that is coming for the heart that holds on
And there will be an end to these troubles
But until that day comes
Still I will praise You, still I will praise You
